The history of the bridge began in 1918. It was in this year that Pennsylvania and New Jersey assembled commissions to prepare for the construction of the bridge. By 1922, all issues were settled, and the members of the commissions approved the design of the suspension bridge. The chief engineer was Rudolf Modjeski, the architect was Paul Philippe Kret. In total, the construction took four years. Almost before the completion of the work, the construction was frozen. The fact is that New Jersey and Pennsylvania could not agree on whether or not to charge a toll on the bridge. The dispute between the states reached its limit, and the already finished bridge was nearly demolished. As a result, the parties nevertheless agreed and introduced a fee. On July 1, 1926, traffic was opened on the bridge. At the time, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world.
Initially, there were no speed limiters on the bridge. Surprisingly, its creators believed that drivers would not drive and would be prudent. Of course, later the limiter was still set.
For a long time, the Franklin Bridge was gray. In 1976, the decision was made to repaint it. Two options were considered – dark purple and blue. In the end, the latter was chosen. This was done so that the design looked good on a sunny day, and in cloudy weather, and against the background of the night sky.
